Flip Over Sew In

Definition:

A flip-over sew-in is a hair extension technique in which wefts are sewn onto a braided foundation and positioned for styling without a fixed part. The hair can be swept from one side to the other for a full, flowing look.

Depending on the installation, a small amount of natural hair may be left out around the top or perimeter to blend with the extensions and help conceal the tracks. Unlike a flip-over quick weave, which uses bonding glue to attach wefts to a protective cap, a flip-over sew-in secures the wefts with thread to the braided base.

Installation Method

  • Section off a small amount of natural hair around the front or perimeter if needed for blending. A no-leave-out version requires a different track placement.
  • Braid the remaining natural hair into a flat cornrow base suitable for the desired flip-over styling.
  • Sew hair wefts onto the cornrows with a weaving needle and thread, keeping the tension comfortable.
  • Arrange the tracks, especially near the top, so the hair can flip from side to side without a fixed part while concealing the wefts.
  • Blend any leave-out with the extensions, then shape and style the hair for volume and movement.

Maintenance

  • Gently detangle from the ends upward, supporting the hair near the roots to avoid pulling on the sewn-in tracks.
  • Cleanse the scalp and extensions regularly. Rinse thoroughly and dry the cornrow base completely after washing.
  • Condition the extensions and use lightweight products to keep the hair soft without excessive buildup.
  • Protect the style at night with a satin bonnet or scarf. Loosely braid or twist curly textures to reduce tangling.
  • If natural hair is left out, keep it moisturized, limit heat styling, and apply a heat protectant before using heat.
  • Have loose tracks adjusted by your stylist. During removal, carefully cut only the weaving thread, avoiding the natural hair and extension wefts.
