Mermaid Braids

Definition:

Mermaid braids are a braided hairstyle with flowing lengths of loose waves or curls woven throughout the look. In individual braided styles, the loose hair often creates a fuller, more cascading finish than braids with only a few curly accents.

The name describes the overall look rather than one fixed braiding technique. Mermaid braids can be created with different braid sizes, parting patterns, and attachment methods, including knotless techniques. They overlap with boho and goddess braids, and stylists may use these names differently. A reference photo helps clarify the amount of loose hair, curl pattern, and finish you want.

Installation Method

  • Prep and Parting: Start with clean, detangled, and blow-dried natural hair. Part the hair into clean geometric or box-part sections (often using a starburst or grid pattern) and apply styling jam, edge control, or hair wax to smooth the roots.
  • Start the Base Braid: Begin a standard three-strand braid or a knotless braid method at the root. Feed in pre-stretched synthetic braiding hair to add length and security.
  • Feed in Curly or Wavy Strands: As you braid down the hair (about an inch or two past the scalp), start pinching off or feeding in loose pieces of curly synthetic or human hair at regular intervals (alternating sides for balanced volume).
  • Leave Out Curls ("Mermaid Effect"): Leave two to four individual sections of curly or wavy hair hanging loose out of the braid as you continue working downward.
  • Braid Past Natural Hair Length: Continue braiding past the end of the natural hair by a couple of inches to secure the anchor.
  • Secure and Seal the Ends:
For synthetic hair: Dip the finished braids into hot water to set the wave pattern, then gently unravel or separate the curls without disrupting the wave.
For human hair extensions: Wrap a small piece of loose hair tightly around the base of the tail several times to form a secure knot, or use nail glue/slip-knots and trim any flyaways with scissors.

Maintenance

Daily Moisture & Curl Care

  • Spray for Hydration: Mix water and a small amount of leave-in conditioner in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the synthetic curls or waves to keep them fluffy and hydrated.
  • Detangle Gently: Use your fingers to carefully separate any tangled synthetic strands starting from the bottom. Avoid heavy brushing on the braided portions to prevent frizz or pulling the style apart.
  • Define and Seal: Apply a small amount of mousse or a light styling gel to lock in the curl pattern and tame flyaways.
Revive Loose Waves: If the waves lose their shape over time, you can re-twist or re-braid loose sections and dip the ends in hot water to reset the curl.

Scalp Care

  • Cleanse Regularly: Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to clean your scalp and remove product or dirt buildup.
  • Oil the Scalp: Apply a lightweight oil (such as argan oil) sparingly to your natural scalp and roots to prevent dryness and itching.

Nighttime Protection

  • Twist or Braid: Before bed, loosely twist or braid your hair into two large sections to minimize friction while you sleep.
  • Cover Up: Wear a satin or silk bonnet (or wrap your hair in a satin scarf) every night to keep the hair smooth and prevent frizz.
