Feed-In Braids

Definición:

Feed-in braids are braids created by gradually adding small sections of braiding hair to your natural hair as the braid takes shape. Often used for cornrow styles, this technique starts with a smaller braid at the root and builds thickness along its length for a gradual, natural-looking transition.

Unlike a traditional technique that attaches a larger section of extension hair at the starting point, the feed-in method adds hair in stages. It can be used for straight-back braids, stitch braids, curved designs, and braided ponytails.

Método de instalación

1. Prep and Parting
• Wash, condition, and blow-dry the hair so it is smooth and tangle-free.
• Use a rat-tail comb to create clean, precise parts for your cornrows.
• Pre-separate small pieces of synthetic braiding hair (such as pre-stretched hair) and keep them organized on a rack or table for quick access.
2. Edge Control and Grip
• Apply a styling gel or edge wax to the natural hair part to smooth flyaways and add grip.
• Use a rat-tail comb or the flat side of a comb to mold and clean up the edges of the part.
3. Starting the Braid (Knotless Foundation)
• Begin at the hairline by taking a very small section of natural hair.
• Split the natural hair into three small strands.
• Braid the natural hair for one or two cycles (overhand or underhand) without adding extensions to create a flat, knotless base that reduces tension on the scalp.
4. Feeding in the Hair
• Hold the first small piece of synthetic extension hair between your thumb and index/middle finger.
• Feed or tuck the extension hair into the strand (often the middle or outer/top strands) just as you cross the natural hair over or under.
• Keep the added hair secure by crossing the next strand over to lock it in place.
5. Gradually Building Thickness
• As you continue braiding down the scalp, feed in progressively larger or more frequent pieces of extension hair to gradually build the cornrow from thin to thick.
• Keep your fingers close to the scalp to ensure the braid lays flat and tight without pulling.
6. Finishing the Style
• Once you reach the end of the natural hair, continue braiding the remaining synthetic hair down to your desired length.
• Dip the ends in hot water to seal them, trim any stray hairs, and apply mousse or holding spray for a neat, long-lasting finish.

Mantenimiento

  • Gently cleanse the scalp between the braids, rinse thoroughly, and allow the hair to dry completely.
  • Apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner or braid spray as needed, avoiding heavy product buildup.
  • Use a small amount of mousse to smooth flyaways without disturbing the braids.
  • Protect the style at night with a satin scarf or bonnet.
  • Avoid tight updos and repeated pulling, especially around the hairline.
  • Adjust care to the finished style: gently detangle any loose curls, and remove the braids when excessive new growth, tangling, or buildup makes them difficult to maintain.
