Boho Knotless Braids

Definition:

Boho knotless braids combine knotless braids with loose curls or waves for a soft, flowing, bohemian look. The braids begin with natural hair, with extensions gradually fed in rather than secured with a pronounced knot at the root.

Unlike classic knotless box braids, this style includes unbraided curly pieces along the braids, at the ends, or both. These curls add texture and movement, but they also need extra care to reduce tangling. The finished look depends on the braid size, length, curl pattern, and hair used.

Installation Method

1. Preparation and Tools

  • Hair prep: Wash, deep-condition, blow-dry or stretch your natural hair, and detangle thoroughly.
  • Products: Rattail comb, sectioning clips, edge control or strong-hold gel for parts, light braiding gel, and nail glue or rubber bands for sealing.
  • Hair extensions: Pre-stretched synthetic braiding hair and bulk human or deep-wave hair for the boho curls.

2. Sectioning and Parting

  • Grid pattern: Part the hair into clean square, rectangular, or brick-laid box sections.
  • Brick-laying: Stagger the boxes in each row so that each braid sits above the gap of the two braids below it for a fuller look.
  • Clip away: Secure unused hair with clips or rubber bands to keep your workspace neat.

3. Starting the Knotless Braid

  • Apply a small amount of edge control or gel around the perimeter of the parted box.
  • Divide your natural hair section into three small strands.
  • Begin a standard underhand or overhand three-strand braid using just your natural hair for the first rotation or two.
  • Gradually feed in small, thin pieces of synthetic braiding hair every couple of crosses to build length smoothly without a bulky root knot.

4. Incorporating the Boho Curls

  • As you braid down past the root, integrate loose curly or wavy human hair strands into the sides of the braid.
  • Add about 4 to 8 pieces of curly hair per braid (fewer at the nape, more toward the crown and face-framing areas).
  • Tuck or anchor the curly hair securely into the crossing strands, letting the bulk of the curls hang loose on the sides.

Maintenance

  • Gently finger-detangle the loose curls regularly, working from the ends upward. Avoid pulling on the braids.
  • Use a lightweight leave-in conditioner or curl mousse as needed. Avoid heavy product buildup.
  • Cleanse the scalp regularly and gently wash the braids when needed. Rinse thoroughly and allow the hair to dry completely.
  • Sleep with a satin bonnet or scarf, loosely gathering the hair to protect the curls and reduce friction.
  • Refresh any loose or tangled curls as needed. Remove the style when excessive tangling, buildup, or new growth makes it difficult to maintain.
